Kinvig (1981)

Costume Design by: Sue Formston

A scifi comedy series from ITV made to try and compete with the BBC's adaptation of the much more popular Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, this one being penned by Nigel Kneale of Quatermass fame - this particular series had a rather meanspirited basis behind it, as the comedy was all about a loser obsessed with scifi and UFOs, and as such ends up fantasizing that he's involved in a generic space opera plot. The costume highlights have to be the various outfits worn by Prunella Gee in her role as Miss Griffin, an Earth woman with a double life as a rather typical space princess smitten with the schlubby main guy of the show. Her first dress is this rather simple vinyl swimsuit-like deal with a silver bodice and collar, with silver boots and pointed wristguards too.
Her second dress is rather more interesting in design, being another vinyl bodysuit with the legs being asymmetrically cut so that one is exposed, with a metallic collar piece over it, along with a hairpin in the same sort of design and material as the collar.
Griffin's third outfit is this asymmetrically cut silver top, which has one hole cut for the breast, itself covered with a different material - in some scenes it is worn with a very large collar as well.
Griffin's fourth outfit is this more simple golden dress fitted with fins on the side, as well as a curved collar ring too.
Griffin's fifth outfit is this very cheesy transparent vinyl cloak, coated in star stickers and attached to large blue shoulder boards - and can you also notice the lightning bolt ear-ring as well?
Griffin's sixth outfit isn't seen well on-screen, but is a tan, black and gold swimsuit-like dress with curved golden shoulderpads and wristguards.
Griffin's last dress is perhaps one of her best, being a seashell bikini with a massive transparent seashell-shaped collar, as well as shiny segments on the wrists and ankles.
Griffin is always flanked by a group of alien servants, whose elder wears this gold and silver robe with large shoulders, worn with bronze shorts.
The other aliens meanwhile are in copper jumpsuits with tubed shoulders and large collars - is it me though, or do these aliens bear more than a slight resemblance to the Ferengi from Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spinoffs...
