Costume Design by Bill Thomas
A cult classic 1970s science-fiction film, Logan's Run focused on the titular Logan (Michael York) and his 'run' from a supposed Utopia where everyone must die at the age of thirty.Logan is one of the 'Sandmen', the city's police force. The Sandmen uniforms are black tunics with a panel of quilted grey fabric over the chest, as well as grey fabric lining the collar. The tunic is worn with black tights.
Bill Thomas also designed complimentary leisurewear for Michael York to wear when on-leave, in the form of a black gown with grey fabric lining the sides. The Sandmen uniform contrasts with the outfits to the outfits worn by the city's citizens, all clad in a variety of loose garments. These costumes were partly inspired by then current 1970s dresses (such as those designed by fashion designer Halston), but also are inspired by Greco-Roman clothing. The influence is seen clearly in the dresses designed for Jenny Agutter to wear as Jessica. Jessica's first outfit is a shimmering green dress (worn over no undergarments!). The gown is worn with a metallic belt and choker, the choker worn with a dangling silver ankh.
Jessica's other outfits are two other sleeveless dresses also in green, with the second one being paler in colour and worn with belt made up of silver rings, as well as dyed pantyhose and green sandals - again, Jessica wears the metallic choker with an ankh dangling from it. The other female citizens dress similarly to Jessica, in loose red, pink or green dresses with died pantyhose and sandals. The male citizens wear v-neck vests with futuristic belts, with likely bought leggings. Bill Thomas designed Holly a high-collared sparkly green dress for Farrah Fawcett to wear as Holly, the assistant at the 'New You' cosmetics facility. Thomas also designed a sparkly riff on a surgeon's smock for Michael Anderson Jr. to wear as the otherwise unnamed 'Doc' running the New You facility. Lastly are the eerie costumes Thomas designed for the extras in the 'Last Day' ritual. The unitards are printed with a flame pattern; a reference to the Phoenix reborn from its own ashes, and the grim finality of cremation.Originally I assumed the masks were just some kind of hockey mask, but the design both too deliberately resembles a skull, and is simply not protective enough for the wearer. No, I feel the masks were custom-made, with complimentary hoods to fully evoke the Grim Reaper.
