Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 4 (1995)

This season of Deep Space Nine would finally introduce a new uniform for Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), consisting of a dark red jumpsuit with a thicker segment around the chest, and lining going all the way down the front - in a way, it feels similar to her first jumpsuit, but also feels a bit similar to the catsuit that her evil mirror universe counterpart, the Intendant, wore in all her appearances.

Quark (Armin Shimmerman) also gets a new outfit, this one being both more restrained and much more elaborate than his previous outfits so far! This one consists of a green tailcoat adorned with orange lining and golden fixatures all over, worn over a blocky vest with red lining over it, and a yellow and blue striped shirt, with the panelling going down the back of the coat as well.

This series also introduced us to the fact that Quark has a set of pajamas, which is a brown patterned jumpsuit with yellow lining.

Quark's brother Rom (Max Grodenchik) also gets a new outfit, this one being a very short (and I mean, short!) greenish jacket worn over a patterned vest - the jacket seems to consist of only one panel on the front, and can be opened whilst still being worn in order to show the vest underneath.

This episode also marks Rom joining the Bajoran's militia, donning a worker's uniform that is a green jumpsuit with solid grey fabric going down over the shoulders and sleeves, with even his traditional Ferengi headband being of the same colourscheme.

Rom's son Nog (Aron Eisenberg) also gets a new outfit, this one being rather more muted than his previous deals, presumably to show that he is maturing into a young man (or Ferengi...whatever) - this new costume consists of a jacket of similar design to Rom's, but made of a motted brown material, and worn over a patterned vest in a similar manner.

'The Way of the Warrior'

Kasidy Yates (Penny Johnson) briefly appears in this episode, wearing an asymmetrically cut pale blue dress which has a sash going over the shoulders, worn over blue tights.

Jadzia Dax also sports gets to sport this mottled yellow bathing gown, with holes cut around the sides just under the chest.

'The Visitor'

In this episode, Jake Sisko ends up living an alternate life thanks to an engine room accident - the aged Sisko dresses a bit less garish than his younger counterpart did, wearing various thick jumpers with angular collars.

The aged Jake also wears this brown wraparound jacket with large tail segments, worn over a grey jumper.

In this different timeline, Jake has a wife, Korena (Galyn Gorg) who sports this shiny orange top and smudgy painters smock.

'Indiscretion'

This episode introduced the Breen, a militaristic species of alien that would get more prominent in the later seasons of the series, when they allied with the evil Dominion against the Federation. The Breen uniforms are definitely striking designs, with their ridged and somewhat flaky armor looking almost chitinous, like an insect's body - though, the helmets worn by the Breen do look a tad like the one worn by Princess Leia in her disguise as Boussh in Return of the Jedi, but personally I think the Breen have the more interesting design!

'Rejoined'

This episode had a group of Trill scientists visiting the Deep Space 9 station, with the most notable of them being Lenara (Susanna Thompson) who is first seen wearing a blue-gold patterned dress with purple lining and a blue sash.

Lenara's second dress is this brown patterned deal that has a panel of red fabric over the front and back.

Lenara's third outfit, worn when recovering from the events that ocurred, is this silvery-grey gown fitted with the same lining around the shoulders as the other Trill gowns.

Also with Lenara are Bejal (Tim Ryan) and Hanor (James Noah), who are first introduced in a party wearing shiny gowns - Bejal wears a gold and red gown, whilst Hanor wears a grey and golden one.

For the rest of the episode, Bejal and Hanor wear a pair of more muted gowns, one of brown material and the other red.

'Starship Down'

In this episode, Quark has to handle a rather more scrupulous commerce minister, Hanok (James Cromwell), who sports a patterned blue top with ruffles around the bottom end, worn over a darker blue and grey fabrics as well.

'Paradise Lost'

This episode was intended to show how the incoming war with the Dominion was starting to make the Federation become a harsher place, though you wouldn't know it with how Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and his family was dressing! Sisko's costume was actually seen in this version in an earlier episode, whilst his jacket was seen in the previous season, but I felt it was more fitting to bring up here - I don't know what's more striking, the patterned vest or that colourful striped shirt!

Naturally, Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) is in a colourful and very 1990s shirt, this one coming in diagonal blocks of colour, with the middle being a multicolored patterned block that makes me think a bit of Lego blocks, somehow.

In this episode, Jake and his father are visiting Benjamin's own father Joseph (Brock Peters), who also is wearing a very colourful side-flap shirt like Benjamin - guess it runs in the family! Joseph Sisko would wear a variety of other colourful shirts in both this episode and later seasons, with one highlight being the blue shirt with pink side-flap.

Joseph also has several waiters working for him, who wear mottled red and green patterned shirts and trousers, though they are very rarely seen properly at all in any episode involving the restaurent.

This episode also has us see the president of the Federation, who is dressed in a rather formal pinstriped gown worn with a pronged headdress.

'Crossfire'

This episode had the former Bajoran rebel leader Shakaar (Duncan Regehr) who is now a politician and wears a crisp brown tunic with lighter patches around the sides.

Shakaar is always flanked by his bodyguard, who wears a rather more stiff grey and black tunic with straps worn over it.

This should also be a good time to mention the dress uniform that Kira wears in this season, which is a fairly simple pale blue tunic fixed with a silver strip, and is worn with pale blue leggings.

'Return to Grace'

This episode marked an appearance grom Ziyal (Cyia Batten), the daughter of Gul Dukat, who wears a powder blue dress that is rather bulky and panelled in design in the usual Cardassion fashion.

'Bar Association'

In this episode, Quark's long suffering brother Rom has enough of his mistreatment and organizes the other employee's of Quark's bar into a trade union. The various employeers when on strike are in a variety of colourful outfits, though apparently a good deal of them were cut from actual off the rack clothes that costume designer Robert Blackman had found various clothes shops and boutiques, in an effort to keep the costs down. However, a fair few more unique outfits were made for the various striking workers regardless - special mention to the yellow and brown striped deal, as in a way the design idea was reused for a Ferengi costume in the next season.

This episode also involved Worf having his quarters being burgled whilst he was practicing Klingon martial arts with Dax, which is a good way to finally bring up this series version of the Klingon workout robes - instead of white with red markings, these ones are black with grey markings. Additionally, Worf and Dax's robes have their markings pointing in different directions.

'Accession'

In this episode, the Bajoran poet Akorem (Richard Libertini) arrives on the Deep Space 9 station, wearing a black tunic with an asymmetrical grey strip going down the front.

Later on, Akorem briefly wears this bulky jumper that has another set of sleeves at the top.

This also marks an appearance of a new design of robe for the Bajoran clergy, this being more simplistic than other designs as it is just a grey robe with a green gown over it, but what makes it notable is the pointed hat worn with it.

'Rules of Engagement'

In this episode, Worf is put on trial for having been responsible for the destruction of a civilian Klingon spaceship. Prosecuting Worf is the Klingon legal officer Ch'Pok (Ron Canada) who wears a crisp bron jacket with open shoulders, worn over a blue shirt with a raised collar in the typical Klingon fashion.

The Klingon civilians in question are dressed in a variety of delightfully colourful garments that are designed in the typical Klingon fashion of wristguards, raised collars and large shoulder boards - of course, they are only briefly seen onscreen due to being dead, which is a bit of a morbid angle here.

'Hard Time'

In this episode, O'Brien is captured and imprisoned by the Argrathi, who wear padded brown overalls and tunics with asymmetrically cut leather straps over them - rather more plain tham some of the various aliens encountered in this series so far.

'Shattered Mirror'

This marked another return to the 'mirror universe', where the rebelling humans were under attack from the forces of this universe's evil version of Worf, who is now a regent and sports a leather cloak with furred sleeves, worn over what seems to be a leather shirt as well - the darkness of the shots makes it hard to see clearly, and the lack of auction photos of the costume means there is just no clear shot at all.

This also introduced us to a more callous and cruel counterpart to young Nog (Aron Eisenberg) who naturally is sporting a more darker coloured costume, consisting of a jacket of a very deep red colour, with dark lining over the front and sleeves.

This also marked a return of the mirror universe's version of Jennifer Sisko, who is seen wearing this dress with a panel of golden material going down the front of it.

At the end of the episode Jennifer is killed, and is briefly seen wearing this asymmetrically patterned green and blue gown as she's passing away.

'The Muse'

In this episode, Jake Sisko ends up the prey of the alien Onaya (Meg Foster), who poses as a woman wearing a dark blue dress with a slanted shoulder, with a translucent gown and silver band over it, making the character both ethereal and sinister.

The last ever appearance of Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett) in the entire series of course had her in rather more understated costumes than usual, with her in a variety of stiff gowns. There is also this rather loud white dress with a large cream gown, but sadly it is never seen fully, nor can I find auction photos of it online at all.

The most notable dress that Lwaxana wears in this episode is a pale peach coloured dress fixed with autumn leaf markings all over - still a rather charming dress.

In this episode, Lwaxana is attempting to break away from her marriage with Jeyal (Micharl Ansara), who is in a stern brown coat that is made of a dotted pattern with a solid brown panel over the shoulders.

'For the Cause'

This episode marked a reapparance from Ziyal, who for most of the episode (and her subsequent appearances) wears this beige dress with a ridged collar and a brown mosaic patterned skirt segment.

Ziyal also wears this gold and green dress that feels similar to her earlier blue dress in design, especially the shoulders - sadly it is only seen when she is watching the 'springball' match going on, so never clearly.

Speaking of said springball game, the contests (one of them being Kira) both have to sport these coloured jumpsuits with panelling over the shoulders, Kira being distinguished by her jumpsuit being green and turquoise.

Kasidy Yates also reappears in this episode, wearing a variety of jumpsuits - her first one is barely seen, but is red with a brown panel over the chest.

Kasidy's second jumpsuit is this blue and black deal with an open v-neck collar and short sleeves, designed in a similar fashion to the pale beige one she sported in her first appearance in the previous season. She also sports a green one with shiny front panelling, but I forget which episode exactly it first appears in.

'To the Death'

This episode was the first appearance of the snivelling Dominion officer Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs), who whilst dying in this episode would return many times later thanks to having several clones. Weyoun's costume is designed very similar to the one worn by the previous Vorta, Eris, that appeared in the second season's final episode, but is made up of brown patterns as well as leather panelling, but with a similar sort of curved asymmetrical design.

'Body Parts'

In this episode, which involved more of Quark's conflict with the boorish inspector Brunt, the most notable costume that appears is only in a brief dream sequence where Quark meets the first ever Grand Nagus Gint (Max Grodenchick), who wears an elaborate costume consisting of a gold-patterned dark red jacket worn over a light blue shirt, and worn with a heavy golden cloak - it should be worth noting that the lighting of the sequence makes it harder to discern the exact colours, and it doesn't seem that there's any photos of what the costume looks like on its own, for shame.
